Wind and Water Theme
January 26-29

Theme – We are continuing our wind and water theme throughout the month of January. This theme allows children to explore wind and water using observations, experiments, and books to learn more about topics such as evaporation, weather, temperature, insulation, rain, and snow.

This week we are reading:
* Rabbits and Rain Drops, By Jim Arnosky
*The Snowy Day, By Ezra Jack Keats
*Golden Bear, By Ruth Young

Small Groups this week:
*Math numbers game (Math)
Students will develop one to one correspondence skills as they count objects from the stories and match with the correct numeral sign.
*Water Sound Exploration (Science)
Students will observe how water sounds when it is poured into various containers. Students will be encouraged to use language to describe how the water sounds.
*Snowy Day Picture
Students will develop fine motor skills as they create a picture of Peter and his snow day adventures!

Choice Activities this week:
Art: Students will use different sized circles and other miscellaneous objects to create snow people.
Play dough table: Students will play with goop. This interesting substance made with corn starch and water hardens and liquefies in your hand!
Writing: Students will continue to write their own stories.
Sand and Water table: Snow with colored water in eyedroppers and spray bottles and hidden treasure ice cubes.
Puzzles and Manipulatives: Students will develop shape awareness and other geometry skills as they construct pictures with Tangram pieces.
Dramatic Play: Winter clothes dress up and mitten match

Songs, Word play and Letters :
Songs: Eentsy Weentsy Spider, 5 Little Ducks, The Wheels on the Bus, Clap Your Hands, What are you wearing?, Open Shut Them.
Poems: 10 Little Fingers, Rain Drops, My Big Balloon, Boom Bang
Literacy Skills: Can you think of words that rhyme with…, I’m thinking of… clue game, Alphabet clue game

. Students will develop math skills as they use Tangram pieces to create different pictures
• Students will explore different objects and their abilities to absorb or repel water while engaging in a science experiment.
• Students will develop literacy skills as they explore books related to the unit and identify key vocabulary words.

Choice Activities this week:
Art: Ice cube painting
Easel: Painting with colors from Rabbits and Raindrops (yellow, green, black, white, gray and blue).
Writing: blank books with crayons, pencils, markers and vocabulary cards
Sand and Water table: Snow, spray bottles and ice cubes
Puzzles and Manipulatives: Matching number pegs and blocks
Dramatic Play: Winter clothes dress up and mitten match
Sensory: Moon sand

January 11-15 Wind and Water Theme

Center Activities this week:
Art: Blowing paint with straws
Easel: Painting with colors from the book Gilberto and the Wind (black, brown and white paint)and spraying water paint to see colors blend!
Writing: blank books with crayons, pencils and markers
Sand and Water: blowing sailboats with straws in water, funnels and other water wheels.
Library: exploring books
Puzzles and Manipulatives: Matching quantities of beads to numbers on kites and matching upper case lettes with clothespins
Dramatic Play: Vetrinary hospital and caring for pets
Sensory: playdough

Theme – This week is the first of our new curriculum. I hope you had a chance to read the notice sent home before vacation regarding the Opening the World of Learning Curriculum. The first unit is called Wind and Water. This week we will explore the ways that wind effects the
students in their everyday lives.

Stories – Gilberto and The Wind, By Marie Hall
One Dark Night, By Hazel Hutchins

Small Groups –
Math group – Students will develop early geometry skills as they play a shapes lotto
game
Fine motor group – Students will develop vocabulary skills as they play a memory
Game using vocabulary words from this week’s stories.
Science – Students will blow bubbles and balloons in front of a fan and see how the
wind can impact their course of direction.

Walk to talk – Students will develop oral language and other pre-literacy skills during the “Walk to Talk” session.

Choice:
- Straw painting with primary colors - Play dough
- Sailboats in the water table - Gilberto’s house
- Snowman counting buttons game - Books to read
- Gilberto painting on the easel - Book creations in the writing center

Music:
