World of Color - Week 2

Enjoy your vacation week! We will see you again on Monday February 28th!

***We will celebrate a color a week during this unit! After vacation we will celebrate red week! Please help your child wear the color of the week to school especially on Thursdays!***
This week we will continue OWL Unit 4 called World of Color! During this unit students will learn about color names, color mixing, stains, fading, and color patterns. Throughout the story time books students will hear about a dog that stains his white coat, a lion who paints pictures, a boy who gets special letters from his grandmother, and a rabbit who wants to buy a special shirt. Children will increase their vocabulary and observe and explore color and patterns directly. They will continue to learn about letters and sounds, including rhyming words and they will participate in music, poetry, mathematics, science and art activities.

Small Groups:
Science - Students will use eye droppers and different primary colored water to see how the colors blend and make new colors.
Math - Students will develop math skills as they create ABC animal patterns.
Language and Literacy - Students will talk about the book Dog's Colorful Day. They will add their own versions of the story by offering Dog another colored spot on his white coat.
Art - Students will use miscellaneous red materials to decorate red crowns for Red day!
**Special Activity - Student will make cookies and decorate them with different colored frosting!

-Easel - Students will use dot markers to create Dog's colorful coat
-Creation table- Straw painting with promary colors
**Art table - This week we will learn about the letter "O". Students will glue octopus cutouts to the letter "O." We will save the picture to create an alphabet book.** Please look around your house with your child to find something that starts with the letter "O." Send it in this week for show and tell!

Science and fine motor- Students will explore how materials can fade. They will conduct an experiment using colored conststruction paper. They will develop cutting skills with scissors.
Math - Students will explore colors and shapes as they play color and shape Bingo.
Math - Students will develop math skills as they create ABAB and ABC patterns.

*Special Activity - On Tuesday we will have our Valentine Exchange! Please remember to work with your child to write their names on the special notes they will send to their friends.*

Wind and Water - Week 5

Due to the many snow days we will extend our unit for one more week. This will be our last week of the Wind and Water unit of our OWL Curriculum.

Books this week:

Small Groups: *Because of last week's snow days, we will complete the activities we missed*
Language and literacy - Students will play a letter sound association lotto game. They will talk about how letters have names AND that they make sounds.

Science- Students will talk materials that hold heat or insulate and materials that do not. We will use common items such as mittens and socks (insulating) as well as tin foil and plastic bags (non insulating) to test how cold the ice cubes feel in our hands.
Fine Motor - Students will make create Clay Experiment Books to draw pictures and record the difference between the sculptures left on the shelf and those kept in an airtight bag.
Art - Students will use glue, glitter and Q-Tips to create glistening snowflakes

Art - Students will make individual paper bag mailboxes for the post office
Choice Time -
-Sensory Table- Water, tubes and funnels
- Games table - File folder games; Mitten match and Snowflake numbers
-Easel - Students will spray different colored water onto white paper with cloud shapes form the Little Cloud story.

-Dramatic Play - Students will sort and match different colored felt mittens on the clothesline

-Creation table- Students will use glitter and die cut snowflakes to create their own snowflakes.

**Art table - We will begin learning about a new letter each week! This week we will learn about the letter "M". Students will glue lollipop cut outs to decorate the letter "M." We will save the picture to create an alphabet book.** Please look around your house with your child to find something that starts with the letter "M." Send it in this week for show and tell!

Extra Notes:

1) If the temperature is above 25 degrees we will enjoy playing outside for our gross motor play time. Please check the weather before sending your child to school. We will try to play outside EVERYDAY! On these days, please send your child to school with a warm jacket, snowpants, boots, hats, and mittens/gloves. Please be sure to label everything!

Highlights from Wind and Water!

We made snow angels and a snowman just like Peter did in "The Snowy Day!"

We used clay to create sculptures. We tested and observed to see what our clay would do when we left it in an air tight container compared to out in the open. Later we will make books to recornd what we see!

We watched our treasure ice cubes melt as we sprayed warm water with spray bottles!

We used squirt bottles and eye droppers to test different materials to see if they were absorbent or repellent. We talked about how familiar materials like our rain coats are waterproof and how other materials like paper towels are absorbent.

We enjoyed a visit from Flower, the 8 year old rabbit from the science center. We pet her, fed her a carrot and made droplets of water fall on her to see if her fur was absorbent or repellent. She reminded us of the rabbits from from "Rabbits and Raindrops."

Look at us! We dressed up like Peter and pretended to play outside on a "Snowy Day!"

Wind and Water - Week 4

This week we will continue Unit 3 of our OWL Curriculum. This unit is entitled Wind and Water. "During this unit students will explore wind and water using observations, experiments and books to learn about such topics as evaporation, weather, temperature, insulation, rain and snow. Through the story time books, children hear about a boy playing on a windy day, rabbits and kittens finding shelter in storms, a child playing in the snow, and a silly hen trying to keep warm in winter. In addition to listening to stories, children increase their listening and speaking vocabulary and continue to learn about rhymes and identify letters and sounds. You can extend what they are learning at school by talking about clouds, rain, wind, temperatures and storms."

Small Groups: *Because of last week's snow days, we will complete the activities we missed*
Language and literacy - Students will experiment with absorbent and repellent materials. They will talk about the meaning of these words and make connections to the story Rabbits and Raindrops.
Science- Students will talk about the cold weather and explore a Thermometer. They will talk about how to use one and test out temperatures of different materials.
Fine Motor - Students will make clay creations and place one creation in an air tight container and one in the open air. After a few days they will compare and contrast the scupltures.
Art - Students will use salt and water to paint a picture of the "Snowy Day." They will glue their own "Peter" character from the story.
Art - Students will use shaving cream and glue to paint a snowman. They will use different materials to decorate it.
Choice Time -
-Sensory Table- Ice cubes with treasures and warm water spray bottles
- Games table - Animal puzzles -Library- Books about wind and water
-Easel - Students will spray blue colored water onto white paper with cloud cut outs to create skiy pictures

-Dramatic Play - Students will pretend to dress up for the snow and play in it like Peter from the Snowy day.
